Availability: 100 in stock

Amlodipine 10 mg is a prescription medication belonging to the class of calcium channel blockers, specifically the dihydropyridine group. It is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chest pain associated with coronary artery disease (angina). By relaxing and widening the blood vessels, Amlodipine facilitates smoother blood flow and reduces the workload on the heart, ultimately helping to lower blood pressure and prevent heart-related complications such as heart attacks and strokes.

Each tablet of Amlodipine contains 10 milligrams of the active ingredient Amlodipine besylate, equivalent to 10 mg of Amlodipine base. It is usually administered orally once daily, with or without food, as directed by a healthcare professional. The 10 mg dosage is typically prescribed for patients requiring a higher therapeutic dose, either due to the severity of their condition or inadequate response to a lower dose.

Mechanism of Action:

Amlodipine works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle cells. Calcium plays a crucial role in the contraction of muscles, including those in the heart and blood vessels. By blocking calcium channels, Amlodipine causes relaxation of arterial smooth muscle, leading to vasodilation. This results in decreased peripheral vascular resistance and a subsequent reduction in blood pressure. In patients with angina, Amlodipine also improves blood supply to the heart muscle, helping to reduce the frequency and severity of chest pain episodes.

Therapeutic Uses:

  • Hypertension: Amlodipine is commonly used as a first-line treatment or in combination with other antihypertensive agents to effectively control high blood pressure.
  • Chronic Stable Angina and Vasospastic Angina (Prinzmetal’s Angina): It helps reduce episodes of chest pain and improves exercise tolerance by increasing oxygen delivery to the heart.
  • Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): In patients with CAD, Amlodipine helps improve blood flow and prevents ischemic episodes.

Dosage and Administration:

The recommended starting dose of Amlodipine is usually 5 mg once daily. However, depending on the individual’s response and tolerability, the dose may be increased to 10 mg once daily, which is the maximum recommended dose. It is important to take the medication at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels.

Precautions and Side Effects:

Common side effects may include swelling of the ankles or feet (peripheral edema), dizziness, flushing, and palpitations. Serious side effects are rare but may include significantly low blood pressure, increased chest pain, or allergic reactions. Amlodipine should be used cautiously in patients with severe liver impairment, heart failure, or low blood pressure. It is not typically recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless deemed necessary by a physician.

Storage and Packaging:

Amlodipine 10 mg tablets should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. The tablets are usually packaged in blister packs or bottles, clearly labeled with dosage strength and expiry date.
