Description

Insulin Aspart 100U/mL: Fast-Acting Insulin for Diabetes Management

What Is Insulin Aspart 100U/mL?

Insulin Aspart is a rapid-acting insulin analog used to control blood sugar levels in people with diabetes mellitus, including both Type 1 and Type 2. Marketed under brand names like NovoLog and Fiasp, Insulin Aspart begins to work within 10-20 minutes of injection, peaks at 1-3 hours, and lasts for about 3-5 hours.

It is typically administered subcutaneously (under the skin) before meals to manage postprandial (after eating) blood sugar spikes. It may also be used in insulin pumps.

Ingredients

  • Active Ingredient: Insulin Aspart (100 units per mL)

  • Inactive Ingredients: Glycerol, phenol, metacresol (preservatives), zinc (stabilizer), sodium chloride, disodium phosphate dihydrate, and water for injection.

How to Use

  • Inject 5–10 minutes before meals, in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.

  • Rotate injection sites to avoid lipodystrophy.

  • Can be used in insulin pumps for continuous delivery.

  • Store unopened vials in the refrigerator (2°C–8°C) and opened vials at room temperature for up to 28 days.

Common Side Effects

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar): Symptoms include shakiness, sweating, confusion, and dizziness.

  • Injection site reactions: Redness, swelling, or itching.

  • Weight gain

  • Mild allergic reactions: Rash or itching at the injection site.

Serious Side Effects

  • Severe hypoglycemia: Can lead to seizures, unconsciousness, or death.

  • Allergic reactions: Difficulty breathing, swelling of face/throat (anaphylaxis—rare).

  • Low potassium levels (hypokalemia): May cause muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat.

  • Lipodystrophy or skin thickening at the injection site.

Monitoring & Follow-Up

  • Regularly monitor blood glucose levels (before and after meals).

  • HbA1c tests every 3 months for long-term glucose control.

  • Watch for patterns of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.

  • Periodic electrolyte tests, especially potassium.

  • Review injection technique and site rotation with a healthcare provider.

Warnings & Precautions

  • Not for use in ketoacidosis (requires IV insulin).

  • Adjust dose during illness, stress, or changes in physical activity.

  • Exercise caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.

  • Pregnancy: Generally considered safe, but dosage may need adjustment.

  • Alcohol use can increase risk of hypoglycemia.

Summary

Insulin Aspart 100U/mL is a powerful tool in diabetes care, especially for those requiring meal-time blood sugar control. Its rapid onset of action makes it ideal for preventing post-meal spikes, though it carries the risk of hypoglycemia if not used carefully. With proper monitoring, education, and medical guidance, Insulin Aspart can be used safely and effectively to improve quality of life for people with diabetes.
