WHAT IS IT?

Albendazole 400 mg suspension is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic in liquid form, designed for single-dose oral treatment of parasitic worm infestations. It is particularly useful for children and adults who prefer or require a non-tablet formulation. Albendazole acts against a variety of intestinal and systemic helminths, providing fast and effective deworming therapy.

HOW IT WORKS (MECHANISM OF ACTION):

Albendazole works by targeting parasite microtubules, essential for energy metabolism. It:

• Inhibits tubulin polymerization, disrupting microtubule formation.

• Interferes with glucose uptake in helminths, leading to energy depletion.

• Causes immobilization and death of the parasite.

After oral administration, albendazole is metabolized in the liver to albendazole sulfoxide, the active systemic form.

INDICATIONS:

Albendazole 400 mg suspension is indicated for the treatment of:

• Ascariasis (roundworms)

• Enterobiasis (pinworms)

• Trichuriasis (whipworms)

• Hookworm infections (Ancylostomiasis, Necatoriasis)

• Taeniasis (tapeworms)

• Hymenolepiasis

• Strongyloidiasis

• Giardiasis (as off-label use in some cases)

• Cutaneous larva migrans

• Hydatid disease (in systemic treatment regimens)

• Neurocysticercosis (with adjunctive therapy)

DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION:

• Children >2 years and Adults:

  • Single dose of 10 mL (400 mg) orally

• Children 1–2 years:

  • Half dose (5 mL or 200 mg), based on clinical judgment

• May be repeated in 2–3 weeks in high-risk areas or reinfection

Shake bottle well before each use.
Can be taken with or without food, though fatty meals enhance absorption for systemic infections.
