WHAT IS IT?

Albendazole 200 mg is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic medication used to treat a wide variety of intestinal and tissue parasitic worm infections. It works by targeting and killing parasitic worms that infect the human digestive tract and other body tissues. This medication is effective, well-tolerated, and often used in public health deworming programs, especially in areas with high rates of parasitic infestation.

HOW IT WORKS (MECHANISM OF ACTION):

Albendazole is part of the benzimidazole group of antiparasitic agents. Its primary action includes:

• Inhibition of tubulin polymerization, which impairs microtubule formation in parasites.

• Disrupts glucose uptake in the parasite, leading to energy depletion.

• Causes immobilization and death of the parasite due to lack of nutrients.

It is metabolized in the liver into albendazole sulfoxide, the active compound that acts systemically.

THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS:

Albendazole 200 mg is used to treat infections caused by the following parasites:

• Roundworms (Ascariasis)

• Pinworms (Enterobiasis)

• Strongyloides stercoralis

DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION:

• Adults and Children >2 years:

  • 200 mg tablet taken as a single dose for mild intestinal infections.

  • Repeated or extended courses may be necessary for systemic or severe infections (as prescribed).

• Can be taken with or without food. However, for better absorption in tissue infections, a fatty meal is recommended.
